Riverdale, N.Y. (May 10, 2007)--Sophomore leftfielder Danielle Just has been named to the All-MAAC First Team, the conference announced this afternoon. Just led the Lady Jaspers with a .375 batting average, and also led the team in hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases, and on-base percentage. Also announced today was the MAAC All-Academic Team, with eight Lady Jaspers making the team.
An All-MAAC First Team selection a year ago as a freshman, Just was also selected Preseason All-MAAC this season. The right-handed hitter more than lived up to that billing this season, leading Manhattan in six offensive categories, and placing second on the team in RBI with 21.
Eight Lady Jaspers were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for their achievements in the classroom throughout the year. Manhattan's eight student-athletes is tied for second most in the conference with Rider University, just one behind the leaders Iona College. Manhattan's representatives are Jaclyn Churilla, Kristin Gelsleichter, Stephanie Gozdziewski, Devon Gustafson, Michelle Gutierrez, Just, Lyndzie Phillips, and Liz Strein.
Cook, Gozdziewski, Gutierrez, and Strein are making their third appearances on the All-Academic Team, meaning they qualified all three years they were eligible to do so.
The Lady Jaspers finished the season with a 4-42 overall record and a 3-13 mark in the MAAC. Head Coach Meaghan Asselta will enter her second season at the helm of the program with a young squad as eight players from this year's team are headed for graduation, but Asselta has already secured commitments from at least eight student-athletes for 2008.
