Riverdale, NY (May 7, 2006)--The Lady Jaspers fell to top-seeded Canisius on final day of the MAAC season. Manhattan concludes the year with an overall record of 26-24. The 26 wins mark the first time since 1994 that the Lady Jaspers tallied over 25 wins in a season.
In the first game, Manhattan's
Stefanie Gozdziewski, the only player to produce a multi-hit performance, led the offense going two for four. Juniors
Liz Strein and Kerry Cook each added a hit, but Manhattan's bats were unable to spark a rally. On the short end of the 6-0 decisions, senior pitcher
Jill Medea finshes the season at 16-12.
In game two, Manhattan's only two runs came from the bats of seniors
Tina Buyea and
Coleen Horgan. Buyea ended her career on a high note, stroking an RBI single up the middle. Horgan, who has been injured most of her career, stepped up and ripped a single through the right side to score senior
Kiera Fox for the Lady Jaspers' second run. Junior
Kristin Gelsleichter, who went 8-6 on the season in the circle, was charged with the 12-2 loss. Only six of the 12 Canisius runs, however, were earned.
Although the Lady Jaspers missed out on their third consecutive MAAC Tournament appearance, their overall win total improved for the third straight year. After winning only eight games four seasons ago, Manhattan picked up 16 in 2004, 22 in 2005, and 26 this year.
