Riverdale, NY - With the cancellation of spring sports for the 2020 campaign, Manhattan Athletics has changed its ATAX Student-Athletes of the Week segment to an ATAX Senior Spotlight. Moving forward, seniors from all of Manhattan's spring sports will be featured three times a week.
Today, the spotlight shines on
Patrick Hennelly (Suffern, NY / Suffern) from the men's cross country and track and field teams, and softball's
Kayla McDermott (Garnerville, NY / North Rockland).
A distance runner, Hennelly was part of the Jaspers' second-place team at the 2017 MAAC Cross Country Championships, earning a top 30 finish on the 8K course. He earned a personal best in the 5,000-meters at the 2018 Colonial Relays, recording a time of 14:54.47, and finished in the top 10 in the event at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships that year with a time of 15:31.03.
"Pat 'Paddy-boy' Hennelly was a great leader for us over the years," said Head Coach
Kerri Gallagher. "His authenticity is one of his best characteristics. He naturally drew the team together and united us in pursuit of our goals. He's a tough competitor and inspired that toughness in his teammates around him. He will always be a part of the turn-around of our program and I'm proud of his commitment, even after suffering a major injury his junior year."
A pitcher, McDermott has garnered 22 career wins during her time at Manhattan, with 181 career strikeouts. This past season, she made six appearances with three starts, going 2-1. She held opponents to a .288 batting average, striking out 10 over 18.0 innings pitched.
"Kayla is the hardest throwing pitcher in our program," said Head Coach
Tom Pardalis. "She has also shown to be a great closer when the games are on the line."
