Riverdale, NY - With the cancellation of spring sports for the 2020 campaign, Manhattan Athletics has changed its ATAX Student-Athletes of the Week segment to an ATAX Senior Spotlight. Moving forward, seniors from all of Manhattan's spring sports will be featured three times a week.
Today's spotlight features rower
Shannon Colford (Epping, NH / St. Thomas Aquinas) and baseball's
Alex Cerda (Miami, FL / Florida Christian School).
Despite battling an injury as a junior, Colford still carried herself as a leader of the team and was named a captain as a senior. During the fall portion of the season, her Varsity 4 boat won every race it competed in and was primed for an outstanding spring.
"Shannon was a constant presence in our top boats," said Head Coach
Alex Canale."This past fall, she was a powerhouse on our Varsity 4 boat, and her personal-best 2k time in one of our last practices gave us motivation when we needed it most."
A four-year starter at the hot corner, Cerda broke out in a big way last year hitting .274 (59-of-215), ranking eighth in the MAAC with 15 doubles, while adding two home runs, 35 RBI and a team-best matching nine multi-RBI games. In last year's MAAC Championship, he batted .364 over four games, highlighted by a multi-hit performance against Fairfield.
"Alex was an important piece in helping build up our program," said Head Coach
Mike Cole. "He had a breakout campaign at the plate last year, while his dependability at third base really helped to solidify our defense. Moving forward, we wish him nothing but the best."
