Huntington, W. Va. (August 25, 2006)--After senior David Mires scored a late goal to bring Manhattan Men's Soccer within one score of the Thundering Herd, Marshall University responded quickly with two goals just 49 seconds apart to secure a 4-1 victory over the Jaspers in what was the season opener for both sides.

Marshall opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Clayton Cochrane fired a shot past starting Jasper keeper John Ciano into the lower right corner. Ciano's night was cut short when the keeper was booked after coming out of the box and interfering with a Marshall player in the 45th minute. Freshman Alex Sylvan would come on for Ciano and spend the remainder of the contest minding the net.

Marshall took advantage of its man-up opportunity when Avneet Shergill found the back of the net in the 56th minute to double the Herd's lead.

Mires sliced Marshall's advantage in half as he began a late scoring blitz, which encompassed three goals in less than two minutes. Mires' score came in the form of a header off a Bryan Knight free kick in the 89th minute.

The Jaspers will have an opportunity to rebound on Sunday, August 27 as they play at defending NEC Champion Robert Morris University.
