BRONX, NY (MAY 29, 2003) - Manhattan College track and field/cross country athletes Karin Larsson (Garphyttan, Sweden),
Magnus Ahlen (Karlstad, Sweden) and
Matthew Spring (Marcy, NY) were named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District I Team, announced by district coordinators today. They will be forwarded on to the national ballot.
Larsson, a junior marketing major, was the only Lady Jasper named to the Verizon's Women Track & Field Academic Team. She is a two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic selection with a 4.00 GPA. Larsson qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Regional in the shot put after winning the MAAC title. She was also named MAAC's Most Outstanding Track & Field Female Performer for both indoor and outdoor track in 2003, and the women's indoor track & field team's Most Outstanding Performer at the Annual Block M Dinner earlier this month.
Ahlen, a senior engineering major, is a four-time MAAC All-Academic selection with a 3.803 GPA. Ahlen qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Regional in the long jump (6.92m) after setting a new meet record and winning the title at the MAAC Championships last month.
Spring, a senior political science and English double-major, is a nine-time All-Academic selection with a 3.847 GPA. Spring qualified for the NCAA Regional in the 5000m with a personal best time of 13:59.96 at the Penn Relays. During cross country season, Spring became the first Jasper to run under 25 minutes at Van Cortlandt Park since 1986. Spring has already been named to the United States Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team and was also selected as the cross country team's Most Outstanding Performer at Annual Block M Dinner.
